The Story Behind the “Thumbs-Up”
There is no doubt Thumbs-Up Designs was meant to be. You see, while on a mission trip in 2004, founder Curt Mavis was contemplating a serious life change – starting his own business. After 30 years in the kitchen and bath design industry, he was considering opening his own firm – one that reflected his own work ethic and artistic vision. As he was thinking about it one day, a quiet Navajo Indian woman came up to him, smiled and gave him the thumbs-up. Not only was his idea affirmed, but his company was named!
Before starting in kitchen and bath design, Curt worked as an art teacher, a background he believes laid a solid foundation for a career in kitchen and bath design. “A lot of what I do in kitchen and bath design involves teaching,” he said. His artistic background also lends itself to the design process, and some of Curt’s designs even feature his own hand-made pottery. Curt is proud to be one of the few Certified Kitchen Designers and Certified Bathroom Designers in Central Illinois.
Thumbs-Up Designs truly is a family-oriented business. Curt, together with son-in-law Josh Gillis, runs the business while wife, Teresa, daughter, Jessica, and granddaughter, Lily, are ever-present and important aspects of the family business. Their dedication to family shows not only in their management but also in their designs. Thumbs-Up Designs prides itself on designing functional and comfortable living spaces that entire families can share and enjoy.
So the Navajo woman was right. Curt says he has never regretted his decision to start Thumbs-Up Designs – and neither have his customers.
